What is Life in Twenty Minutes?
The typical taxi ride takes about twenty minutes, and it never ceases to amaze me how my customers
touch my life and soul in such a brief encounter. Often, the customer and I begin our trip as strangers, and by the time we reach their destination we have become friends.

My journey to becoming a taxi owner
In September 2013, my husband, John, and I began driving taxis in Galveston, Texas. At the time, this was a decision made out of necessity. John had retired from the petro-chemical industry in Port Arthur, Texas, and had taken a contract position with the University of Texas at Arlington working with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality performing environmental inspections of underground petroleum storage tanks, I assisted him with this contract in scheduling inspections, and preparing the documents necessary for the client. When this contract came to an end, we both began an intensive job search.
My education is in Accounting, and my primary work experience is in Human Resources in the Emergency Medical Services industry. I am also a licensed Real Estate agent, and worked several years in residential property management. With quite an impressive resume, I applied for every conceivable job advertisement that fit my experience, and many job advertisements where I might be tangentially qualified. After three months, I received zero response beyond the initial auto reply that my application had been received.
John's education and work experience is equally impressive, and his three month job search was as equally unfruitful as mine. During this time, he talked about his interest in the various taxi company advertisements, and he finally got up one morning saying, "I'm going to the Yellow Cab office." He did go, and returned home quite excited about their taxi driver program. He highlighted the details and requirements, and I said, "I can do that, too."
We completed all the the City requirements of background/driver record check, physical, and drug screening, and purchased our first Pink Taxi the first week of October 2013. The initial plan was the I would drive the day shift, and John would drive nights. Very quickly we began building a very nice reputation with a regular customer base, and realized we were in a unique position as we had the only Pink Yellow Cab in Galveston. Three weeks into our new taxi adventure, we found out Yellow Cab had a second Pink Ride and intended to sell it to anyone who wanted to drive it. We discussed the pros and cons of us buying the second Pink Taxi over lunch, and immediately returned to the office to inform the General Manager she had a sale. We are, now, the proud owners of Galveston Yellow Cab's PINK FLEET; we own the only Pink Taxis in Galveston, Texas.
We began the Taxi adventure out of necessity, and discovered a passion.

Well done, Tate. I know you'll agree that this is about the most fun we've ever had. It's been wonderful to be able to combine our love for Galveston with making new friends. We so appreciate the positive response we've received.... John
